Sometimes you just gotta be there

November 12, 2014

Sometimes a leader simply MUST be there. The leader has to be physically present. Even if it is merely “symbolic” and the you not do say or do much, if anything… as a leader you sometimes just gotta be there.

Beijing, China to Ottawa – 10,323 km (6415 miles) – Beijing is 13 hours ahead of Ottawa
Ottawa to Auckland, NZ – 14,219 km (8835 miles) – Auckland is 18 hours ahead of Ottawa

Stephen Harper, Canada’s Prime Minister, get this truth. That’s why he flew more than 10,000 km on Monday from Beijing, China to Ottawa to be present at the Remembrance Day observances, specifically at the National War Memorial. He did have an official duty in laying a wreath and did say a few words. However, shortly thereafter he was back on an airplane on his way to Auckland, New Zealand for meetings prior to the G20 Summit in Australia.

I don’t see this as an expensive photo-op! This is real leadership!
