Book Review – Their Name is Today by Johann Christoph Arnold

November 17, 2014

I don’t understand all the glowing reviews of this book or the author. While Their Name is Today: Reclaiming Childhood in a Hostile World identified some key issues and challenges of parenting/teaching children in the 21st century, at times it felt like little more than a “rant” about poor and thoughtless parenting. The author raised legitimate issues/concerns and seemed to offer little in terms of advice or examples on how to adopt an alternative approach, not just avoid the “don’t-do” list (except for nature walks of various purposes). I do not think I entered with particular expectations about the book, but I still have no clue what I should or should not do either as a parent or educator in light of the allegedly hostile world children are growing up in. The author was not a known/recognized name and did little to establish his reputation. Although his presentation seemed consistent with a Christian worldview overall, biblical principles were not consistently integrated into the book and yet the approach seemed to be for a faith-based audience.
