Book Review: If by Mark Batterson

October 25, 2015

If (Mark Batterson) cover

I could read any book Mark Batterson writes all day long. His stories are so enthralling and inspiring and his ability to turn a phrase and capture the thought of a Scripture verse or story is truly unique. In this walk through Romans 8 (“the Great 8”), Batterson challenges the reader to consider the ten if’s and their implications for the Christian life.

With the subtitle of “Trading your If Only Regrets for God’s What If Possibilities,” the pastor of National Community Church explains how this happens using the phrases of Romans 8. He breaks the chapter into four sections: If only, As if, What if? and No Ifs, Ands, or Buts about it.” Batterson finds incredible illustrations, to introduce or describe topics, that powerfully convey the concept/principle from a new angle.

While the book communicates a message of perpetual hope instead of regrets or resignation, it closes (as does Romans 8) with a equally strong reminder that the Christian life will include adversity of many kinds.

I believe you will be challenged and changed in your biblical thinking and actions when you read and apply If!
